Independence and technical continuity

An important principle in the work of ASK-Solutions is that people and organisations should understand as clearly as possible where their data, accounts and technical systems are held, who has access to them and what decisions have been made. When something goes wrong, we therefore look beyond the immediate problem. Together, we examine what happened, restore access where possible and make the situation understandable again.

Sometimes it then becomes clear that someone does not want to, or cannot, continue managing a particular technical aspect themselves. A domain name may previously have been lost because its registration was unclear or access had been lost, a website may have become dependent on a provider that can no longer be reached, or a telephone connection may have become part of an arrangement that is difficult for its user to understand.

In these situations, it may sometimes be possible to arrange ongoing management of a limited technical element. This is not the starting point, nor is it a package someone chooses in advance. First, we look together at what is already in place, what is going wrong, who holds the relevant rights and which solution is easiest to understand and maintain over time.

All amounts on this page include VAT unless expressly stated otherwise.

Understanding and recovery come first

When a problem occurs, we first try to establish how the existing arrangements actually work. This may involve looking together at accounts, correspondence, registration details, invoices, DNS records, settings, technical documentation and the parties involved.

Where possible, we then restore access and ensure that the person concerned regains control. We discuss what we have found, the available options, the decision being made and the reasons for it. Technical management does not automatically pass to ASK-Solutions.

Only if it then becomes clear that someone would prefer to hand over certain technical or administrative tasks on an ongoing basis can a separate agreement be made. Even then, we aim to keep ownership, rights and responsibilities as clearly as possible with the appropriate person or organisation.

Domain names

A domain name should be under the control of the person or organisation to whom it belongs. If access has been lost, we therefore first work together to establish where the domain is registered, who is recorded as its holder, which intermediaries are involved and what information is needed to restore control.

This may require contact with the current provider or intermediary, the registrar or, in exceptional cases, the registry responsible for the relevant top-level domain. Old correspondence, invoices, registration details and other records may be needed to reconstruct what happened.

Once access has been restored, if the holder would prefer not to take on the ongoing technical management themselves, a manual transfer can be arranged in consultation with them. The domain can be transferred to a provider with which ASK-Solutions has had good experiences and has appropriate arrangements concerning personal data. The actual rights holder remains registered as the domain's registrant or holder.

Such a management agreement does not make ASK-Solutions the owner of the domain. DNS and other necessary technical settings are configured appropriately, but there is no ASK-Solutions self-service portal through which domains have to be managed. Changes are discussed and carried out manually where necessary.

Indicative recurring domain costs

The amounts below include VAT. We publish them to clarify the costs that may arise if a domain continues to be managed through ASK-Solutions following such a process. They are not intended as a domain registration price list.

Situation Amount
.nl domain name .nl domain name € 18.15 per year
.com domain name .com domain name € 21.18 per year
Other top-level domains Other top-level domains Depends on the registration costs; the amount is discussed in advance.
Recovering a domain name or temporarily placing it in safekeeping Depends on the time required; the amount is discussed in advance.

Websites

For websites, too, the starting point is not that a website must be hosted through ASK-Solutions. An existing website can continue running with its current provider, move to another suitable provider or be set up in a different way.

During recovery, migration or building a website together, it sometimes becomes clear that someone wants to continue managing their own content but does not want responsibility for the underlying server environment, technical accounts or other infrastructure. In that case, it may be agreed that the website continues to run on infrastructure managed through ASK-Solutions.

There is no hosting portal or product catalogue for this either. The technical setup follows from the actual website and what is needed in that particular situation. The person or organisation whose website it is should retain as much access to and control over their own content and data as possible.

Costs when a website continues to run through ASK-Solutions

The amounts below include VAT. They only indicate possible annual costs where limited ongoing technical management through ASK-Solutions has been agreed.

Technical setup Amount
Lightweight website using HTML/PHP or Nocterra, without a separate database requirement € 167.71 per year
WordPress website with a database and the associated technical environment € 246.84 per year
Online shop, for example using PrestaShop, requiring a more substantial technical environment € 326.70 per year

Telephony and VoIP

The organisational arrangements for telephony are different. The VoIP connections described below are not provided by the IRADIS Foundation. They are provided through a separate operation, independent of the foundation, which also uses the name ASK-Solutions and is registered for this activity with the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM). The shared name does not mean that this telephony activity is part of the foundation.

The way of working follows the same practical principle. First, we look at what someone already has, which provider or numbers are involved, what is going wrong and which solution is appropriate. Sometimes an ordinary mobile, landline or VoIP connection with another provider is the simplest solution, with no reason to keep anything running through ASK-Solutions on an ongoing basis.

In a limited number of situations, a VoIP connection through this separate operation proves a practical fit. This may be the case, for example, when someone needs a straightforward connection that can be configured without a complicated provider portal, or when continuity of an existing number is important.

There is no dedicated self-service portal here either. Settings and changes are discussed directly and implemented technically.

Costs of a VoIP connection

The amounts below include VAT. Call charges are calculated afterwards based on actual usage. Calls are billed per second, with no call setup fee.

Item Cost
VoIP connection € 3.65 per month
Calls to landline numbers in the Netherlands Currently € 0.026 per minute
Calls to mobile numbers in the Netherlands Currently € 0.055 per minute
Other call charges Calculated afterwards based on actual usage at the applicable rates.

As call charges depend on the underlying rates, the per-minute rates quoted may change. Actual charges are calculated according to usage.

Avoiding new dependencies

Providing ongoing technical management for a domain name, website or telephone connection in certain situations does not change the underlying principle. The aim is not to solve an existing problem by creating a new dependency.

First, we try to make the situation understandable, restore access and clearly establish ownership and control. Only if it then becomes clear that ongoing management of a limited technical element works better for the person or organisation concerned can an agreement be made.

This is why we describe these possibilities as background information rather than as a separate range of services. The amounts are included so that anyone facing such a situation can see in advance what recurring costs it would involve.
