Technical and digital self-reliance

Technology is useful only when people can make meaningful choices about it. Owning a device, website or account on paper is not enough when it cannot be understood, moved, repaired, backed up or maintained without permission from one supplier.

ASK-Solutions works with people and organisations that want to regain or preserve practical control over the systems they depend on. This includes physical devices and tools as well as software, websites, accounts, data and infrastructure.

Who this includes

Technical and digital self-reliance can matter to:

Technical and digital belong together

A modern product is rarely only hardware or only software. A repairable device can still become unusable when activation servers disappear. A physically intact machine can be blocked by paired components, inaccessible diagnostics or discontinued updates. A website can appear to belong to an organisation while its content, domain, design and data remain controlled by a supplier.

Self-reliance therefore involves several connected capabilities:

How ASK-Solutions works on this

We combine several routes rather than treating self-reliance as a single service:

Specialised areas of work

ASK-Media-Solutions, ASK-ICT-Solutions and ASK-Technology-Solutions provide specialised routes to information about particular areas of ASK-Solutions’ work. They are not separate companies or independent organisations. The activities described through these names are carried out by ASK-Solutions as part of its public-benefit technical, educational and social work.

These areas include websites and digital publication, systems and data, free software, electronics, technical development and practical digital support. Where people can take part locally, activities may also be available through a location within The Owl’s Nest and are shown through its activity badges and local information.

Information, not dependence

Support should not make a person or organisation permanently dependent on the helper. Some systems do require specialist maintenance, but good work leaves the owner with clearer documentation, realistic choices and a better understanding of what they have.

This is why ASK-Solutions distinguishes between doing something on someone’s behalf and helping them retain ownership of the result. A technically successful solution can still be a poor solution when only one supplier can understand, repair or move it.
