Knowledge only gains real social value when others can not only receive it, but also understand, investigate, apply, criticise, change and pass it on again. Formal availability is not enough. A source-code file can be public and still remain practically unusable when almost nobody understands how the system works or when the knowledge required to investigate and continue it is missing.
ASK-Solutions therefore works on free and transferable knowledge. In software and hardware, this means among other things that people retain essential freedoms to use, study, modify and share systems. In practical knowledge, it also means that experience, context, working methods and the reasons behind choices do not disappear unnecessarily with one person, organisation or generation.
A final answer or published design can be useful, but it does not automatically show how someone arrived at that result, which assumptions were made, what did not work or how the work should be assessed in another situation. Preserving knowledge is therefore more than archiving.
Free and transferable knowledge requires that others, as far as reasonably possible:
ASK-Solutions deliberately speaks of free software and free hardware. The starting point is not merely that source material is visible or that collaboration can become more efficient. The central question is which freedoms a user must retain in relation to a technical system.
The four freedoms formulated within the free-software tradition therefore fit closely with our broader principles: being able to use, study, change and share a system. For ASK-Solutions, those freedoms are not an isolated software ideal, but a concrete technical expression of much older questions about knowledge, dependency, power and human agency.
Making source material available on its own is therefore insufficient. The normative question remains whether the user can actually exercise the necessary freedoms and whether those freedoms can also be preserved through further transfer.
The tension between knowledge that remains within a restricted circle and knowledge that is brought outward is much older than modern technology. In a range of philosophical and religious traditions, distinctions are made between esoteric and exoteric knowledge. That distinction is not only about secrecy. It also concerns authority, interpretive power and the question of who can gain independent access to understanding.
A text, design or piece of source code can be formally exoteric and still remain functionally esoteric. When language, context, education, practical experience or access to investigation are available only to a small circle, effective power over the knowledge remains concentrated. Free knowledge therefore also requires education, documentation, reproducibility, criticism and the transfer of competence.
This connects the goal directly with epistemology: not only what do we know, but how do we know it, who can verify a claim, what conditions are needed to arrive at understanding independently, and how do we prevent a position of knowledge from quietly becoming a position of power?
A freedom that exists only for the first recipient is not durable. If A shares knowledge freely with B, but B can then close the derivative work in such a way that C loses the same freedoms, knowledge transfer may have begun but has not remained structurally free. Copyleft is one way, within copyright law, to protect certain freedoms through a chain of transfer.
A shared work model raises a different question. Even when all documentation remains free, a participant may later change access conditions, confidentiality, decision-making power or participation in ways that make others less free than they were before sharing began. The HPL framework around The Owl’s Nest is therefore intended to protect not only the transferability of documents, but also the conditions under which a shared model does not, through collaboration itself, turn into a new dependency.
Knowledge can also be restricted without being literally secret. Technical protection measures, contractual conditions or legal prohibitions can make investigation difficult while the underlying object remains formally available. For ASK-Solutions, the ability to investigate how something works, test assumptions and expose errors or abuse is therefore part of meaningful freedom of knowledge.
That does not mean every dangerous practical capability should be made available without judgement. Precisely where knowledge may have major consequences, freedom, responsibility, concentration of power, verifiability and irreversible harm must be weighed together. A monopoly on dangerous knowledge can itself create a vulnerable concentration of power; the complete absence of limits can likewise produce unacceptable risks.
Not all knowledge fits into a manual. Through experience, someone may feel how a material behaves, hear that a bearing is not running properly, recognise an intermittent fault, or know how to demonstrate a difficult concept in a way that allows another person to genuinely learn it. Such tacit knowledge can disappear when it does not move between people.
ASK-Solutions therefore connects documentation with practical learning, collaboration and long-term preservation of knowledge. Workshops, repairs, internships, mentoring, shared projects and practical environments can make visible knowledge that would otherwise never enter files or books.
